History
Know More About West Hills Montessori.

Today, over 3,000 Montessori programs across over 100 school districts in the United States, offer some sort of Montessori program. As the popularity of the Montessori method continues to grow, identifying the best Montessori program for your child becomes an increasingly difficult task. However, just like the Montessori method itself, West Hills Montessori has a history that proves why its level of recognition is continually on the rise.

West Hills Montessori was created by the Gersh family, the owners of West Hills Day Camp, a place that has provided incomparable day camp experiences for the children of Long Island since 1954. Edward Gersh, the company’s founder, was himself an educator whose mission was to continually improve the social, emotional and physical development of children.

In 1991, Ed Gersh and his family employed their 37 years of experience in the area of childhood development to create a unique, hybrid Montessori program unlike any other. Registered with NYSED, West Hills Montessori is the only Montessori school on Long Island offering classes for toddlers, all the way through 6th grade. Additionally, the West Hills Montessori program utilizes the beautiful, 18-acre campus of West Hills Day Camp as an “outdoor classroom” that provides vast learning opportunities that support the accelerated curriculum and the full complement of Montessori materials the children work and experiment with. By challenging the minds and bodies of our students, our program inspires curiosity and respect for the living environment. The history of West Hills Montessori is over 20 years in the making, and thanks to the dedication of our incredible staff and the inspiration provided by the young minds we teach, a new chapter is written each and every day.
